The conservation end of Chichester as it was in the 1960s

In the Conservation Area

For those of you interested in learning about individual properties on Westgate, in April 2016 we began to post details of the buildings at the conservation end of the Westgate, which can be found from various sources. Among these articles you can find some of general interest such as:

Homes in the conservation area can be called up here, and further sorted by then clicking on the north or the southside tags at the bottom of every post or in the tag cloud at the bottom

In the West End

To further flesh out this catalogue, we have now turned our attention to any details about all of the individual dwellings that may be available, up to and now including the west end of the street. By using the north or southside tags you can make the list more manageable to just your side of the street. Mostly dating from the 1930s, this documentation is correspondingly lighter however.

Side streets

Eventually we hope to be able to post similar information about the four side streets and how these more recent developments got built. There are already references to Mount Lane as a historic street and which will be added to. More details on Henty Gardens, St Bartholomew’s Close and Tannery Close will follow.

Phase 1: To search a property on the full length of Westgate:

The numbering used is the current system, that is odd numbers westward up the south side and evens westward up the north side. These numbers stretch from 1-91 and 2-92 with notable gaps.

To further assist your search, please use the tags in the tag cloud at the bottom of each page to:

a. divide your view into the Conservation Area or the West End

b. search according to the position of each property on either the south or north side of the street

c. where known, architectural periods are also indicated in the tags

Information on other buildings on Westgate is available here. We hope to start delivering Phase 2 concerning the side streets in 2026
