This is the only house on the street that has carried the same number under both systems. It has always been no. 36.
Residents
The Holt family lived in this house for more than 70 years.
The first John Holt recorded in the censuses as living on Westgate, was in 1851, when he was at no. 36, next to the Waggon and Lamb PH.
In the house were his 29-year-old wife Mary Anne and 4 children, who had all been born in Chichester (people therefore known as Cicestrians to this day). They were Fanny (?), John O. (5), Sarah Ann (4) and Mary Ann (2 months).
By 1891, both the elder Holts were 69. Ellen was with them aged fifty.
John continued to live at no 36 for the rest of his life and by 1901 he was a widower, his daughter Ellen still living with him. Ellen was a spinster and a schoolteacher, born in 1858.
John had died by 1911, but Ellen continued to live in the house. In 1921 she is recorded as a teacher of shorthand.
