More on the Holts. See the entries for nos. 16, 20 and 36 Westgate to complete the picture
As perviously described, John Ogburn Holt, who had lived at nos. 7&9 Westgate, acquired a number of properties on Westgate which he let, of which this was one. He signed a lease on 11th August 1896 for no 35 (old number) for £200, including:
“a workshop and garden which is divided from those belonging to adjoining houses formerly in occ. of William Burrell and Joseph Baxter in St Bartholomew and now of W. E. Grover.
Witnesses: W.B.B. Freeland of Chichester, solicitor, Walter Bennett,
John Ogburn 137 High Street, Winchester, Grocer.”
As you will see under that entry, John Holt Snr. was living at no. 36, next door to this let property. Presumably, ownership was still in the family, when – in 1931 – builder Charles Holt was living there.

As noted under the entry for no 36, Charles’s aunt Ellen was still living at 36, next to the Wagon and Lamb at no 34, and teaching shorthand.
